Filter Software for the School District.

The Standard District Filter

The iWayPatrol Standard District Filter is a multiple method filter whose goal is  to block Web pages that are illegal or inappropriate for students.  The list of pre-identified problematic sites are central to the filter system, but self labeling by web page producers, pattern recognition and other approaches are used.

In general iWayPatrol operates at the lowest possible level, the problematic URL, rather than at the domain level.

Web sites that are pornographic are blocked as well as sites that:

iWayPatrol does not reduce all users to the elementary school level.   The Standard service permits the adjustment of filtering to elementary vs. high school students by using building sub-net routing information.

iWayPatrol provides blocking for not only Web Browsing, but Netnews as well.  iWayPatrol users do not have to close off this valuable service because some of the news groups are bad.

iWayPatrol is compatible with a wide range of typical network features, including:

  • all browsers

  • all workstation hardware

  • all firewalls and proxy servers

  • all school operating systems.

The Standard iWayPatrol is a virtually turn key filter.  Browsers on each workstation must be set to point to the proxy.  But installation, programming the routers to insure filter use, and training in the use of browser based administrative screens is provided as part of the product installation.   Weekly or daily updates of filter blocking lists are provided by iTECH staff with no action required by the School District.

iWayPatrol software is scalable.  It runs on hardware ranging from a microserver to a multiprocessor enterprise server.

A central design concept in the Standard Version of iWayPatrol is district level control over all dimensions of the filter.  The district staff can adjust the filter to their needs and standards.  The district personnel can remove the blocking from any site they choose.

The Advanced School Filter has all the features of the Standard School Filter, but it also offers the possibility of identifying each individual to permit customizing the level of Internet filtering to each individual.   The Advanced filter is particularly useful for districts where the policy is to exempt faculty from filtering.  It is also useful were the District wishes to permit access to pre-approved sites for the younger Internet surfers.

Filtering features of the Standard District Filter:

  • multi-method filtering

  • variable filtering by age level

  • works with a wide range of hardware including Macs and firewalls

  • permits faculty override

  • local control of filter parameters and blocking lists.
