iWayPatrol is a server based, proxy based Internet filter which has been designed to protect children from pornography and other illegal activities on the Internet. 

Some of  iWayPatrol competitors use a just a blocking list.  While other school filter products are based only on content filtering.  iWayPatrol is unique in that it uses several simultaneous approaches to filtering including:

URL blocking lists
Self labeling tags (RSACi, Safe for Kids, and Safe Surf)
DNS analysis
text pattern matching

A balanced combination of filtering techniques avoids the over-blocking characteristic of single method approaches

The iWayPatrol filter deals first of all with pornography.  In addition a number of other classes of services are optionally blocked. Marketing sites for alcohol, tobacco and drugs are blocked.  Chat sites, and dating or escort services are blocked.  Sites providing bootlegged software, bookie services, on-line gambling and access to illegal drugs are blocked.   The iWayPatrol filter can also optionally block games and a variety of time-wasters.  (Check out the use of  blocking categories.)

The iWayPatrol filter has been designed to provide local control of every aspect of the filtering process.  The local school district can add or override any item on the blocking list; adjust all filter parameters; and excluded filtering of sites by classification

While other school filter products provide a "one size fits all" solution for both elementary and high school students,  iWayPatrol provides three distinctive age levels of filtering: elementary, middle school and high school.  (Check out the discussion of  iWayPatrol's age level filtering.)

iWayPatrol was designed to avoid over-blocking.  Some school filter products are based on lists blindly generated by computer robots.  Worse still, some school filters are based on a gaggle of  "artificial" intelligence rules.  One filter provider claims to use over a 100 minimum wage part time college students to identify the bad sites.  The iWayPatrol blocking list is prepared by humans who thoughtfully review each entry to classify and age grade any site added to the blocking list.  (For more information check out the pages on steps taken to avoid over-blocking.)
